Let's See - the ankle bone connects to the thigh bone - nah, that's not right

OK, I now have received everything except the SATA drives and a few small miscellaneous items.

Guess I've got no excuse now --- and really, I know the ankle bone connects to the shin bone --- it's the thigh bone I haven't figured out. I think I'll just stare at it for a day or two.

Hey Don

I think you have done a lot of research on this project. However, I have one question for you. Why did you go with the Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 128MB/650 Video Card instead of the 9700 or even the 9800? Or even for that matter the new ATi's Radeon X800 Series X-Files? I know you would have to sell off your first born son to pay for this card and its definitely over kill for everything out there, but what the hell! I know that for low-end systems the 9600 is a very hard card to beat, I have recommended that card to numerous people, basically its awesome!

Also the CD/DVD you chose is Plextor PX-708S CD/DVD Combo writer, I have not read much about this drive. DId you just want a DVD burner or just a DVD player? The reviews of the Waitec Action 8/ LiteOn 851S whick is a DVD burner can be read at: http://www6.tomshardware.com/firstlook/20040506/index.html

But the equipment you picked out is so close in quality that I mentioned that I do not think you will see that big of differences.

Well I am heading up north for the day!

One quick tip, build your CPU in your kitchen, and before you start building make sure you touch the faucet to ground yourself. You don't need to short your stuff out!

Thanks PD for the comments and suggestions.

I chose the 9600XT for several reasons. I don't plan to play games on the machine(ok maybe occasionally), so hi performance and 256MB didn't seem necessary & cooling and noise was a major concern. It's use will be primarily feeding hi quality video via the DVI output directly to the display. I also was trying to keep the total cost below $1800, so that was a factor.

The Plextor CD/DVD writer was really a coin toss for me. I chose the Plextor primarily based on a review in "Silent PC Review" that rated it as one of the quietest drives available. I may find that I need a better DVD ROM, but can add that later. I'll check out the Waitec and LiteOn - thanks.

I think my first steps are to mount the memory and CPU on the MB along with the Zalman CPU Cooler. Good idea on doing this in the kitchen. I do have one of those antistatic wrist attachments that I'll be sure and use.

All comments, guidance, and suggestions are welcome - Thanks, Don
